Mayor Genrich Announces Green Bay’s Conservation Corps

Seeks Coordinator to Implement Program

(Green Bay, WI) – Today Mayor Eric Genrich announced the formal acceptance of a $65,000 grant to plan for the implementation of a Green Bay Conservation Corps program. This grant funding will be used to hire a Conservation Corps Coordinator who will be tasked with developing a plan to expand the city’s capacity for environmental stewardship and community beautification by training and educating Corps members to work on designated projects in the City’s parks, greenways, trails, and rights-of-way.

“Green Bay is in a community that cares deeply about the quality and strength of our parks and local environment. The creation of the Green Bay Conservation Corps will enable us to better prioritize this work by creating a unique municipal program that builds a greener community while employing and training tomorrow’s workforce,” said Mayor Eric Genrich.

The current park system consists of 2,658 acres of recreational open space. These open spaces include but are not limited to, 68 parks, 1 natural resource area, 13 greenways, 11 urban green spaces, 4 community gardens and the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary. The Conservation Corps’ projects could include the eradication of invasive species, habitat restoration and preservation, multi-use trail maintenance and expansion, community garden upkeep, enhancing access to public spaces and increasing volunteer involvement.

“We are thrilled that the City of Green Bay has been awarded this AmeriCorps funding opportunity. This program, when implemented, will provide many opportunities to improve and activate the City’s park system and the City as a whole,” said Parks Department Director Dan Ditscheit.
