City of Green Bay to Consider Partnership with LimeBike for new Bike Share System

(Green Bay, WI)—A partnership is being considered between the City and LimeBike to launch a new bike share system in Green Bay. LimeBike is a private company that owns and operates systems in nearly 60 cities across the country. Similar to Milwaukee’s Bublr Bikes and Madison’s B-Cycle, LimeBike offers residents the use of a bike for short distance trips around town. The bike share system would offer residents and visitors an additional, healthy transportation option that comes at no cost to the City and taxpayers.

LimeBike would manage a dockless bike share system in Green Bay that does not require riders to return bikes to designated racks or docking stations. Riders find and unlock bikes using a smartphone app. When users get to their destination, they simply park the bike upright, lock it using the built-in lock, and make sure it’s not blocking sidewalks, driveways, crosswalks, bus stops or street corners. The cost to ride is $1 for 30 minutes. Students may receive a 50 percent discount.

“Bike share is a great way to enhance our multi-modal transportation system, improve quality of life, and help make Green Bay more competitive.” said Mayor Jim Schmitt. “Unique urban amenities like bike share programs are also key ways we can retain and attract young talent. Its features like this that help make Green Bay a better place to live.”

The Improvement & Services Committee will be considering the agreement with LimeBike at their next meeting on Monday, May 7th at 6:15 PM in the City Council Chambers (Room 203) at City Hall. Members of the public are encouraged to attend. Final action on the agreement may be taken by the City Council as early as their meeting on Tuesday, May 15 at 7:00 PM.
